I love the sound of breaking (boot sectors)

Ok all fixed!

I have to confess i had had a few light ales and then started fiddling with some kernel modules.

I am going to get a tattoo on the back of my hands. its going to say "have you had a beer?" on my left hand and on my right hand its going to say "then put the computer down".

But actually I like it when things break because that is when I learn the most about them. I really like puppy linux, i was able to get in at my old data with it and back it up onto another computer.

Phew anyway I hope my next few posts aren't quite too nerdy and trainspotting.

OH MY GIDDY AUNT

Ive just trashed my Linux partition that had all my residency work on it!!!

I was fiddling with it after drinking beer

As God is my witness I wont rest until I have that data back.

(currently writing this using a live linux disk (puppy linux))

why is the hoover extension always too short (just like summer)

Ive been sort of throwing myself into work at the moment to keep busy. I have been having really bad dreams, obviously as a result of the past week. The day after we got the news I had a dream that I was at a kids party but everyone was dressed in black. Dramatic I know, but that was a light one.

On a much lighter note I have been working flat out all weekend getting the Poly space usable. I came home tonight so tired I could cry then I somehow found this

It really is worth a watch

mercerism

logged into second life to do a bit of work. I discovered that even my second life world has crumbled. The view above is of my land. I have been building a gallery there. On logging in today this is all I found.

GOD DAMN IT

I have just had a phone call from my wife.

We didn't win the tribunal

My son is stuck in a school that is not meeting his needs. In most cases that would possibly make the difference between getting an A or a C in GCSE maths. Winning in my sons case would mean getting enough physio so that deformities to his spine do not crush his lungs and give him a life expectancy of 30 years at the most.

Thank you God

Right now I feel like I am stuck in a Kafkaesque trap.

cant write any more

residency update

Just a quick one as its getting on for 7 and I'm hungry.

The residency at Isis is going really well

I'm not going to give too much away at the moment as it is at a really early development stage. What seemed like a quite a small project has grown out of all proportion. The idea of producing a 'distributed narrative' seemed exciting. It is exciting. But it is massive. To be truly distributed it needs to be developed, exploded and then all of the little remaining shards need to be placed very carefully all over the net.

On top of that, I'm not a writer. So I have been developing a technique (which will remain mostly under wraps for now also). I have also been talking to a real writer and picking his brains (I hope he doesn't mind too much) http://www.chazbrenchley.co.uk/

Here are 2 screen shots of work in progress:

The first is a shot of an I-ching hexagram generator I build in PureData using Gem

The second is a shot of Alexandre Quessy's Audio_PureData package working on my system. This is a way of using net send in pure data to send and receive TCP messages from a server using PHP.

See http://pear.php.net/pepr/pepr-proposal-show.php?id=422

I just got it working and built a rudimentary page that displays the messages (just numbers at present) But I was so happy that I jumped to my feet and forced poor Rusty (works at Isis) to come and have a look at some numbers on a screen, he went 'ooh' at the appropriate times.

SoNiC DeAtH AsSaUlT (with a cup of tea)

Yesterday we ran the GYOML residency workshops. See ptechnic.org for details. Both Steve and Matt were stars and the workshop went well.

That was followed by an event called Datarama, this was set up to allow people to just turn up an sho what they are working on, it can be a creative piece of software, a film they are making, a cool photo they have taken on their mobile phone. Basically anything techy and fun. It was a really good atmosphere last night and more people turned up than expected.

I'll be putting footage of both online ASAP.

TRIBUNAL

For those of you who know me or have been following this blog

It was the tribunal for my son today. This was a dispute between us his parents and the Local Education Authority over their failings in supporting his education and our request that he is funded to be sent to a more specialist school (Percy Hedley)

It was hard, Have you ever had an argument that brewed for a few years and the lasted seven solid hours? Right now I don't know how we did, we fought some good points, they won a few on technicalities. But what I can say is that we did it with dignity and righteousness.

It will be 2 to 3 weeks before we hear what the panel decides.
